Company Research
Swede Point Creamery produces several types of cheese, organic soap, body lotion, and other personal care products. Products may contain organic goat’s milk, organic honey, and local herbs from their family farm.
Their product price point is mid range, and products are sold in specialty and grocery stores within a 200 mile range of Madrid Iowa. They are a no frills brand.
Demographic & Persona
The demographic for Swede Point Creamery was already established as Iowa residents, ages 25-65. They value small, local businesses, as well as purchase goods from specialty stores and farmer’s markets. My research of the demographic showed agriculture as their priority.
This project’s objective was to take this existing company demographic and revamp it for the environmentally conscious consumer. I wanted to highlight agriculture and sustainability. My persona profile was designed with all of this research in mind.
Product Ideation
The project required a minimum of 5 different products and packaging designs which used a consistent brand system. I decided to design bath and beauty products made from their organic goat’s milk. I brainstormed many different products which could contain goat’s milk.
From this brainstorm list, I choose the products that I felt would be most appropriate from the Swede Point brand. This included:
Body Lotion
Hand Lotion
Bubble Bath
Bath Oil
Set of 3 Face Masks
Gift Set Sampler
Mood Board
I wanted to design a mood board to show my visual direction for both the brand and packaging. My process for creating mood boards starts with collecting as many images as possible that matched my vision. I then pair the images with a color palette and typography to get a general visual direction.
The mood board highlights no frills and simple design. It gives the brand a fresh take on their products, while sticking to their organic roots.

Branding & Packaging
The branding process was difficult since the brand system and guidelines would have to be applied on multiple forms. My products were diverse, needing different packaging forms. I designed layouts for packaging labels with different brand systems. The process of finding the best packaging system was hands on, and I would try different labels on different products to make refinements.
Swede Point Creamery Products
Once the brand system was determined, it was time to think about the actual product packaging which supported the demographic values. All of my packaging choices were deliberate in terms of sustainability.
I chose glass as the primary packaging, encouraging the consumer to reuse the containers and diminish one use plastic waste. For the label, I wanted them to be tag style attached with twine to reduce the use of glue. The jar products would use wheat paste glue since they could not use the tag system. Corks were chosen as the lid for two main reasons. First, corks are compostable. Second, corks could allow for easy refilling.
To push sustainability one step further, I designed a system for the business to grow. A refill system to reduce packaging waste. As incentive, customers can visit the farm or go to one of their participating farmer’s markets to refill their bottles for up to 50% off.
Information Architecture
Once I finished the full product line, I needed to start designing the e-commerce app component of the project. My process for designing apps always starts with an information architecture to gain an understanding of the overall functionality.
Wireframes
My next step was creating rough wireframes. I started by making quick sketches of two different basic layout ideas for displaying the products. Since this was my first time working on an e-commerce app, I spent more ideation on the shop layout. Once I have some basic sketches, I create digital wireframes with shapes for a clean iteration. These wireframes are the foundation for the interface.
Interface & Prototype
I used Adobe XD to design the app interface and prototype interaction. The process included taking the wireframes as a guideline, then applying the brand and product photography. All of the user interface assets utilize components of the brand system to create one cohesive image for Swede Point.
App in Use
Here is the finished app in use with a walkthrough of the main interface screens. You can also use the interactive prototype here!
Final Thoughts
This was a large project to handle by myself, with three different components. In just 6 weeks, I was able to re-brand a small business, design new products with sustainable packaging to fit the brand, and produce an interactive e-commerce app prototype. I learned how to create a fully cohesive brand that highlights the demographic values and better time management skills.
If I had more time, I would build out the full app interface design. The time constraint kept me to only the most important screens of the app, and I would life to add more. The other aspect I would like to work on is expanding the product line. Swede Point Creamery does not just make bath and beauty products.
Here are some final images to showcase my finished work.
